COVID-19 SAFETY POLICIES:

Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Students During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic

1. Guiding Principles to Keep in Mind

  • The more people a student or staff member interacts with, and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread. The risk of COVID-19 spread increases in educational settings as follows:

    • Lowest Risk: Students and teachers engage in virtual-only classes, activities, and events.

    • More Risk: Small, in-person classes, activities, and events. Groups of students stay together and with the same teacher throughout/across school days and groups do not mix. Students remain at least 6 feet apart and do not share objects (e.g., hybrid virtual and in-person class structures, or staggered/rotated scheduling to accommodate smaller class sizes).

  • COVID-19 is mostly spread by respiratory droplets released when people talk, cough, or sneeze. It is thought that the virus may spread to hands from a contaminated surface and then to the nose or mouth, causing infection. Therefore, personal prevention practices (such as handwashingstaying home when sick) and environmental cleaning and disinfection are important principles.

2. Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Cloth face coverings are an additional step to help slow the spread of COVID-19 when combined with every day preventive actions and social distancing in public settings.

  • Face masks are REQUIRED to be worn throughout the entire encounter and ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BE TAKEN OFF.

    • Acceptable masks include cloth face coverings, N-95 respirators, and surgical masks.

3. Hand Hygiene

  • Students are required to wash their hands with SOAP & WATER, for at least 20 seconds, when entering the building.

  • Prior to demonstrating skills or using equipment, students will be REQUIRED to HAND SANITIZE BEFORE and AFTER using the equipment.

4. Social Distancing

  • Students will stand 6-FEET-APART from the instructor AT ALL TIMES.

  • Equipment will be set-up in such a way that social distancing will be maintained at all times.

5. Equipment Decontamination

  • It is the policy of EVAC’s TC that all manikins used in any CPR course be decontaminated immediately upon completion of each course according to guidelines established by the American Heart Association. Proper manikin decontamination is imperative to prevent the spread of bacterial, fungal, and/or viral disease.

    • The following is the process for proper manikin decontamination:

      • Clean all aspect of the manikin with red wipes or bleach wipes found in the CPR storage cabinet.

      • Be sure to clean all airway valves, masks, and devices with these wipes as well.

      • Allow the equipment to air dry before returning to the storage cabinet.

  • All instructors will follow these approved guidelines on cleaning equipment. Manikins are not to be used if appropriate cleaning/disinfection cannot be verified. When disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling, make sure to keep the parts for each manikin separate.

  • The Eastchester EMS CPR Program maintains a written record and acknowledgment with EVERY course submission that equipment was properly cleaned and decontaminated and will continue to follow this at all times.

6.Summary of Guidelines

  1. Masks are required at all times during the encounter.

  2. Students will wash hands with soap and water in the restroom immediately after entering the building.

  3. Students and Instructor will use hand sanitizer BEFORE and AFTER using the equipment.

  4. Instructor will decontaminate equipment used BEFORE and AFTER utilization and record this on the course roster submission form.
